HUMAN RELIGION AND CULTURE:
Human
religion is primarily of the Church of Telgard; some choose one
of the other heretical sets of beliefs like the Children of Faeterna,
but few humans have reason to search for religious truth. The Church
of Telgard, though it began with the Elves, has its largest and
richest center in Korresh, where Traplars and Brantars commonly
have noble titles and vast treasuries. Any human not able to get
a job can always go to the Church; more brantars are always needed.
There
are a few primary human cultures; the oriental nomad culture of
Tiangchou features the most prominent horse-traders and riders,
and its nomadic lifestyle and animal totems are beginning to flourish
after finally reclaiming the city from the presence of the Dark
Enemy that had held it for so long. The Empire rules over everything
in Korresh (including Tiangchou), and its culture has influence
in most trading cities as well. It is supposedly civilized, but
slavery and political maneuvering are common in the cities and among
the nobles. The Plainsmen generally ignore their ties to the Empire,
bothering only to pay their taxes and ignoring everything else;
they are content to farm within their humble villages. Lastly, the
Desert humans of Tahnn have long ago lost any ties to Korresh or
the other humans; their culture is highly reflective of the ss'tiss
influence, and they no longer follow the Church of Telgard. Theirs
is a nomadic tribal culture as well, but similar more to the real-life
Bedouins than the oriental culture of Tiangchou.
There
are other minor cultures of humans; a few pirate settlements, fishing
villages on the coasts, mountain tribes between Korresh and Tahnn,
and of course, traders.
HUMAN
NOBILITY:
Human
nobility within the Kingdom of Korresh is granted by title, and
is inhereted. The Emperor's line descends from the greatest hero
of the Scourge, Queen Leshya, and the bluest blood is that blood
which is of the purest descent. Granting of a noble title means
adoption into one of the Families if it is to have any real political
power; otherwise, the title is of some parcel of land outside of
Korresh that has little political power. The Baronies of Tegn and
Kel are exceptions to this general rule.
Aside
from these noble titles, the Plainsmen choose their village leaders
by election, and the leaders of the nomads of Tiangchou are determined
by birth, though chieftans can abdicate or can lose their birthright
through dishonourable deeds.
